CI-133 Garnered Over 100,000 Signatures, Will Go Before Montana Voters in November 2026 Election

Special interests and lobbyists still play a big role in Helena. That’s why we need CI-133–it will ensure that at the end of the day, Montanans still have the final say about what happens in Montana.”
— Bob Brown, former MT Secretary of State
HELENA, MT, UNITED STATES, August 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The ballot initiative to protect Montanans’ right to propose, pass, and veto laws has been certified by the Secretary of State and will appear on the November ballot. The Montanans Decide campaign turned in over 100,000 signatures to county elections offices by the June 19 deadline. Counties and the Secretary of State then had time to process and confirm that the initiative had reached the approximately 60,000 signature threshold to qualify for the ballot. On August 17, the SOS announced that the initiative would come before voters in November.

Two former Secretaries of State, Bob Brown, who served as a Republican from 2001 to 2005 and Mike Cooney who served as a Democrat from 1989 - 2000, also announced their support for the measure. “There’s a reason 68% of Montanans support CI-133. We have overseen dozens of elections and the people’s voice should be honored in Montana. Ballot measures are what hold government accountable to Montanans. It’s been that way since the copper kings were trying their damnedest to buy votes and control government with money. Unfortunately, special interests and lobbyists still play a big role in Helena. That’s why we need CI-133–it will ensure that at the end of the day, Montanans still have the final say about what happens in Montana,” said Brown.

Recent polling shows overwhelming support for CI-133, a nonpartisan measure that ensures ballot initiative processes are fair, impartial, and efficient. “Ballot measures have been used by folks across Montana, of every political persuasion, to pass laws that benefit the state. It’s also how we veto bad laws if the government oversteps. We need to ensure this process works for every day Montanans,” said Cooney. The campaign will continue talking with voters across Montana about the importance of a fair and impartial ballot initiative process and keeping power in the hands of Montanans, not special interests, lobbyists, and their money.
