U.S. Schumer Pushes New Votes to Curb Iran War Role
Addressing the Senate floor, the New York Democrat criticized President Donald Trump's approach to the conflict and urged Congress to take stronger action.
"Trump has proven over and over again that he's incapable of getting our country out of this mess. Congress needs to step up," Schumer said.
Schumer highlighted a bipartisan effort launched before Memorial Day in which Democrats and several Republican lawmakers backed advancing a war powers resolution aimed at limiting US military engagement.
"We will not stop forcing votes to end this war until this disastrous war is over once and for all.
"Trump and his allies in the Senate may not see the urgency of ending this war, but Democrats and the American people do," Schumer said.
His remarks came as Trump said negotiations with Iran are continuing "at a rapid pace," signaling ongoing diplomatic contacts despite heightened regional tensions.
The Middle East crisis has intensified since US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf region, while also closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, temporarily halting hostilities. However, follow-up talks held in Islamabad failed to secure a permanent agreement, leaving diplomatic efforts ongoing as all sides continue to search for a longer-term resolution.
