U.S. Rejects UN International Migration Review Forum
(MENAFN) The US State Department formally distanced Washington from the International Migration Review Forum on Monday, announcing it would not endorse the body's May 8 "progress" declaration in a statement that amounted to one of the sharpest public rebukes of UN migration policy in recent memory.
The department pulled no punches in its written statement, accusing United Nations bodies of systematically working to "advocate and facilitate replacement immigration" across the United States and broader Western nations — a characterization that signals a fundamental break between Washington and multilateral migration governance frameworks.
The statement laid out the administration's grievances in stark terms: "In recent years, Americans witnessed first-hand how mass immigration laid waste to our communities: crime and chaos at the border, states of emergency in major cities, and billions of taxpayer dollars funneled towards hotels, plane tickets, cell phones and cash cards for migrants."
It went further, directing pointed criticism at UN agencies and their affiliated partners: "Much of this was driven by UN agencies and their partners, which did not just facilitate the invasion of our country, but proceeded to redistribute our own people's wealth and resources to millions of foreigners from the worst corners of the world."
The department argued that the heaviest toll of unchecked migration has been borne by working-class Americans — those competing daily for jobs, affordable housing, and access to public services — and charged that the UN had failed to account for their struggles.
"The UN has little to say about them," the statement read.
Washington also signaled a sweeping shift in its overarching immigration philosophy, moving away from the international community's prevailing framework of migration management entirely.
"Our goal is not to 'manage' migration, but to foster remigration," the department declared.
The statement positions the Trump administration on a collision course with UN-led global migration governance, raising fresh questions about Washington's broader role in multilateral institutions and international human mobility frameworks going forward.
