Denmark’s PM Says Trump Still Serious About Greenland Takeover
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Mette Frederiksen told attendees the U.S. leader's intentions are unwavering. "I think the desire from the U.S. president is exactly the same. He is very serious about this theme," Frederiksen declared during a panel discussion.
The Danish leader drew a firm line on the Arctic territory's future, invoking principles of national sovereignty and self-governance. "We have to protect sovereign states. We have to protect people's right to self-determination. And the Greenlandic people have been very clear: they don't want to become Americans," she emphasized.
Reports indicate a trilateral working group involving Washington, Copenhagen, and Greenland has been formed to tackle U.S. "security concerns" in Arctic waters.
In Friday remarks, Frederiksen acknowledged the diplomatic initiative while signaling limits to potential concessions. "We now have a working group, it's good. We will try to see if we can find a solution ... But of course, there are red lines that will not be crossed. And we will stick to our strategy," she stated.
Tensions have partially subsided after Trump dismissed military options during discussions in Davos last month. The U.S. president also reversed threatened tariffs against eight European nations following consultations with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The autonomous Danish territory—Earth's largest island—maintains self-rule while Copenhagen controls defense and foreign affairs. Since reclaiming the presidency in 2025, Trump has repeatedly voiced his determination to "obtain" Greenland, triggering widespread alarm across Europe.
