Nearly Two-Thirds of Germans Call U.S. Major Peace Threat

(MENAFN) A seismic shift in German public opinion has positioned the United States as a primary danger to international stability, with nearly two-thirds of respondents identifying America as a threat to global peace, new polling data disclosed Tuesday.

The Allensbach Institute survey, commissioned by the Center for Strategy and Higher Leadership and conducted throughout January, revealed 65% of Germans now classify the US among nations presenting the gravest risks to worldwide security.

The findings expose a precipitous collapse in German confidence toward Washington following Donald Trump's inauguration for his second presidential term in January 2025. Just 24% of Germans perceived the US as threatening in 2024—a proportion that surged to 46% in 2025 before climbing to today's record high.

NATO alliance commitments also face mounting scrutiny among German citizens. A mere 32% believe the US would deploy military forces to defend Europe under attack, while 35% expressed outright skepticism and 33% remained uncertain about American security guarantees.

Despite escalating wariness toward Washington, Russia continues dominating German threat assessments. Approximately 81% of respondents identified Russia as dangerous to international order. China occupied third position, with 46% characterizing the nation as destabilizing to global peace.

The representative poll surveyed approximately 1,100 Germans between January 6 and January 19.
